Pools and Spas

Pool or spa owners can do their part too. There are a variety of ways to renovate your pool to make it more green friendly. One small step is to find ways to recycle all of the plastic containers that pool chemicals are purchased in. While you may not be able to recycle any containers that have held harmful chemicals the normal way, you can look for companies or events that specialize in recycling them. If you'd rather avoid the harmful chemicals altogether, you might also think about changing your pool to a salt water system, instead of chlorine. Energy efficient pumps are another option. Some pumps are available in models with varying speeds, allowing you to use less energy when your pool needs less cleaning. A timer for the pump is also important, so that it only runs when you need it to. Keeping your pool free of cracks and covered when not in use is important too. A pool that loses about an inch of water per day can add up to over 100,000 gallons in a year, depending on the size of the pool. A pool cover can help by eliminating up to 95% of water loss due to evaporation.
